Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Lingao County is adjacent to Chengmai County on the east, bordering Danzhou City on the southwest, Beibu Gulf on the northwest, and Qiongzhou Strait on the north. The whole territory is 34 km wide from east to west, 47 km long from north to south, and covers a land area of 1,344.5 km2. It consists of 11 towns, 157 village committees, 20 neighborhood committees, and 6 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 509,700.

Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Chengmai County borders Haikou and Ding’an on the east, Tunchang and Qiongzhong on the south, Lingao and Danzhou on the west, and Qiongzhou Strait on the north. Situated in the city cluster around Beibu Gulf, it is an important part of “Haikou Economic Circle”. Chengmai County, formerly known as Gouzhong County, was established in the first year of Yuanfeng in the Western Han Dynasty (110 BC). It is one of the three ancient civilized counties in Hainan. The county has a land area of 2,072.97 km2 and a sea area of 470.53 km2, and consists of 11 towns, Jin’an preparatory group, and 191 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 573,000.

Located in the inland northeast of Hainan Island, adjacent to Wenchang on the east, Ding‘an County borders Qionghai on the south, Tunchang and Chengmai on the west, and faces Haikou to the north across Nandu River. The county covers a land area of 1,196.56 km2, and consists of 10 towns, 108 village committees, 15 community neighborhood committees, and 3 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 348,100.

Located in the northeast of Hainan Island, Wenchang City faces the sea on the east, south and north, adjacent to Haikou and Ding’an on the west, and borders Qionghai on the southwest. It is known as a town of coconut, culture, aerospace and longevity. The city has a land area of 2,459.98 km2, a sea area of 5,245 km2, and a coastline of 289.82 km. It consists of 17 towns, 2 farms, 270 village (neighborhood) committees, and 2,918 natural villages. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 596,000.

Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Danzhou City is adjacent to Lingao County and Chengmai County on the east, bordering Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the southeast, Baisha Li Autonomous County on the south, Changjiang Li Autonomous County on the southwest, and Beibu Gulf on the west and north, facing Vietnam across the sea. Danzhou is a central city in the west of Hainan. The terrain is low in the northwest and high in the southeast. It is composed of three parts: plains, hills, and mountains, and has a tropical humid monsoon climate. The city has a land area of 3,405.39 km2, a sea area of 1,818.07 km2, and a coastline of 299.53 km, and has several ports, including Baimajing Port, Xinying Port, Haitou Port, Bochao Fishing Port, and 8 river systems, Nandu River. Zhubi River, Wenlan River, Beimen River, Chujiang River, Yangqiao River, Paipu River and Shanji River. It is the city with the largest land area and the longest coastline on the whole island. It consists of 16 towns, 230 administrative villages, 46 communities, and 16 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 1,069,400.

Located in the west-northwest of Hainan Island, Changjiang Li Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Changjiang County”) is adjacent to Baisha Li Autonomous County on the east, bordering Ledong Li Autonomous County on the south, facing Dongfang City to the southwest with Changhua River as the boundary, neighboring Beibu Gulf on the northwest, and connected to Danzhou City to the northeast across Zhubi River. The county has a total area of 1,620 km2, and consists of 8 townships and 91 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 254,100.

Located in the west-central area of Hainan Island, Baisha Li Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Baisha County”) is adjacent to Qiongzhong on the east, Ledong on the south, Changjiang River on the west, and Danzhou on the north, with a total area of 2,115.65 km2. It consists of 11 townships, 75 administrative villages, 9 communities, 9 farming settlements, and 441 natural villages. It is a mountainous county inhabited by Li, Miao and other ethnic minorities and an old revolutionary county. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 193,600.

Located in the north-central area of Hainan Island, Tunchang County lies at the junction between plains of North Hainan and mountainous areas of Central Hainan, bounded on the east by Ding’an County and Qionghai, bordering Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the south, and Chengmai County on the northwest. It is known as a “gateway to Central Hainan”. Tunchang County is 70 km away from Haikou, equivalent 45 minutes’ drive by expressway. The county has a total area of 1,231.54 km2, and consists of 8 towns, 119 village (neighborhood) committees, and 5 reclamation areas. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 308,500.

Located in the east of Hainan Island, Qionghai City is adjacent to Wenchang on the northeast, Ding’an on the northwest, bordering Tunchang and Qiongzhong on the southwest, and bounded on the south by Wanning. In 2021, the city had a land area of 1,710 km2, and administered 12 towns, 1 overseas Chinese economic zone, and 209 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 523,300.

Located in the southwest of Hainan Island, Dongfang City lies on the east coast of the Beibu Gulf, and the lower reaches of the Changhua River. It borders Ledong Li Autonomous County on the south and southeast, is bounded by Changjiang Li Autonomous County across Changhua River from the north to the northeast, faces Beibu Gulf and Vietnam across the sea to the west, and neighbors Limu Mountains on the east. It has a land area of 2,251.522 km2, a sea area of 1,833.68 km2, and a coastline of 116 km, and consists of 10 townships, 1 overseas Chinese economic zone, and 195 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 463,900.

Located in the central area of Hainan Island and at the northern foot of Wuzhi Mountain, Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Qiongzhong County”) is surrounded by Qionghai, Wanning, Baisha, Danzhou, Lingshui, Baoting, Wuzhishan, Tunchang and Chengmai. Haikou-Sanya Expressway and Wanning-Yangpu Expressway intersect in the territory. It is the central intersection of the “田”-shaped expressways in Hainan Island, boasting distinct location advantages. The county has a total area of 2,704.66 km2, and consists of 10 townships, 100 village committees, 532 natural villages, 13 communities, and 10 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 212,800.

Located in the southwest of Hainan Island, Ledong Li Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Ledong County”) is connected to Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County and Wuzhishan City on the east, adjacent to the South China Sea and bounded by Sanya City on the south, bordering Beibu Gulf on the west, and bordering Baisha Li Autonomous County and Changjiang Li Autonomous County and Dongfang City on the north. The county has a land area of 2,765.53 km2 and a sea area of 1,723 km2, and consists of 11 towns and 193 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 550,100.

Located in the hinterland of Wuzhi Mountain in the south-central area of Hainan Island, Wuzhishan City borders Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the east, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County on the south, Ledong Li Autonomous County on the west, Baisha Li Autonomous County and Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the north. It has a total area of 1,144.28 km2, and consists of 7 townships, 1 farming settlement and 63 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 103,900.

Located in the south-central inland of Hainan Island, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Baoting County”) borders Lingshui on the east, Sanya on the south, adjacent to Ledong on the west, Wuzhi Mountain on the northwest and Qiongzhong on the north. The county has a total land area of 1,153.24 km2, and consists of 9 townships, 68 village (neighborhood) committees, and 1 county-run farm. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 167,400.

Located on the southeastern coast of Hainan Island, Wanning City is adjacent to the South China Sea on the east, Qiongzhong on the west, and Lingshui on the south, bordering Qionghai on the north. The city has a total land area of 1,883.5 km2, a sea area of 2,550.1 km2, and a coastline of 109 km, and consists of 12 towns, 1 tourist area, 197 village committees, and 15 neighborhood committees. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 624,900.

Located in the southeast of Hainan Island, Lingshui Li Autonomous County (hereinafter referred to as “Lingshui County”) is connected to Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the north, bounded on the northeast by Wanning City, bordering Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County on the west, adjacent to Sanya City on the southwest, and South China Sea on the southeast. It has a total land area of 1,128 km2, a sea area is 1,223 km2, and a coastline of 118.57 km, and consists of 11 townships, 116 administrative villages (neighborhood committees), and 2 settlements. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 386,500.

Located at the southern tip of Hainan Island, Sanya City, also known as “Lucheng”, is adjacent to Lingshui Li Autonomous County on the east, Ledong Li Autonomous County on the west, Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County on the north, and the South China Sea on the south. It consists of 4 administrative districts - Haitang, Jiyang, Tianya and Yazhou, 57 communities, 92 village committees, and 491 natural villages, covering a total land area of 1,922 km2. It has a sea area of 3,500 km2, a coastline of 263.29 km, 19 large and small harbors, and 68 main islands. As of the end of 2021, the city had a total registered population of 710,900.
