Located in the northern part of Hainan Island, Haikou, nicknamed “Coconut City”, is adjacent to Wenchang City on the east, Ding’an County on the south, Chengmai County on the west, and Qiongzhou Strait on the north, facing Guangdong Province across the sea. The total area of the city is 3,126.82 km2, of which the land area is 2,296.82 km2 and the sea area is 861.44 km2. It consists of four districts - Xiuying, Longhua, Qiongshan and Meilan, 22 towns, 21 streets and 199 communities (including 3 farming settlements), 248 administrative villages, and 2,233 natural villages. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 2,135,700.

Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Lingao County is adjacent to Chengmai County on the east, bordering Danzhou City on the southwest, Beibu Gulf on the northwest, and Qiongzhou Strait on the north. The whole territory is 34 km wide from east to west, 47 km long from north to south, and covers a land area of 1,344.5 km2. It consists of 11 towns, 157 village committees, 20 neighborhood committees, and 6 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 509,700.

Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Chengmai County borders Haikou and Ding’an on the east, Tunchang and Qiongzhong on the south, Lingao and Danzhou on the west, and Qiongzhou Strait on the north. Situated in the city cluster around Beibu Gulf, it is an important part of “Haikou Economic Circle”. Chengmai County, formerly known as Gouzhong County, was established in the first year of Yuanfeng in the Western Han Dynasty (110 BC). It is one of the three ancient civilized counties in Hainan. The county has a land area of 2,072.97 km2 and a sea area of 470.53 km2, and consists of 11 towns, Jin’an preparatory group, and 191 village (neighborhood) committees. As of the end of 2021, the county had a registered population of 573,000.

Danzhou

Located in the northwest of Hainan Island, Danzhou City is adjacent to Lingao County and Chengmai County on the east, bordering Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County on the southeast, Baisha Li Autonomous County on the south, Changjiang Li Autonomous County on the southwest, and Beibu Gulf on the west and north, facing Vietnam across the sea. Danzhou is a central city in the west of Hainan. The terrain is low in the northwest and high in the southeast. It is composed of three parts: plains, hills, and mountains, and has a tropical humid monsoon climate. The city has a land area of 3,405.39 km2, a sea area of 1,818.07 km2, and a coastline of 299.53 km, and has several ports, including Baimajing Port, Xinying Port, Haitou Port, Bochao Fishing Port, and 8 river systems, Nandu River. Zhubi River, Wenlan River, Beimen River, Chujiang River, Yangqiao River, Paipu River and Shanji River. It is the city with the largest land area and the longest coastline on the whole island. It consists of 16 towns, 230 administrative villages, 46 communities, and 16 farming settlements. As of the end of 2021, the city had a registered population of 1,069,400.
